District Chairman's Message

9th District Update

I am honored that Sue has asked me to tell everyone about the current events in the Ninth District. Last April, I was elected at our district convention to the position of First Vice-Chairman and a few short months later became Chairman of the 9th District.

Lt. Governor Casey Cagle, who lives in the district, decided he would forgo a run for Governor shortly before the district convention and our immediate past Chairman, Kevin Harris, decided to run for one more term as District Chairman. Just before the State Convention Kevin resigned his chairmanship to work on the Gubernatorial campaign of our sitting Congressman, Nathan Deal. These events elevated me to acting Chairman for a few months until the next district meeting where I was elected Chairman.

During my brief term as First Vice-Chair, I helped organize a training session for county party chairmen and activists lead by my good friend, Mark Rountree. The day I was elected as Chairman, Gilmer County hosted our annual county GOP picnic where we hosted about three hundred fifty attendees and twenty-four candidates, including many statewide contenders. The following fall, Andrew Turnage, our Second Vice-Chair, put together a very successful golf tournament.

With Congressman Deal's departure a plethora of good candidates have come forward to be considered for our next representative in Washington. I expect our districts voter turnout to be very high due to the efforts of these excellent candidates. The candidates come from varying backgrounds including: doctors, a city council member, state representatives, a state senator, and previous office holders.

Recently, and possibly most importantly, my good friend David Ralston was elected as Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives. The Speaker hails from Fannin County, right in the heart of the District. Our next District meeting will have freshman representative Stephen Allison, recently appointed to the position of Deputy Whip, as our featured guest. If the business of the State of Georgia doesn't keep him away, Speaker Ralston will attend as well. I cannot say enough good things about the Speaker. He is the statesman and leadership Georgia needs right now.

The counties are the backbone of the District. They have held fish fries, BBQ's, Victory Dinners, and Christmas parties. The members of the county parties and the District Committee are fired up and are true grassroots workhorses. I have also found a number of like-minded individuals in the tea party organizations and I would suggest to every Republican across the state to make friends with these groups and find common goals, such as defeating President Obama's policies by electing conservatives at every possible level.

In 2010, the District is looking to embark on several ventures. We are working with the Sixth Congressional District to hold a joint fundraiser in April or May with a high profile speaker. Following up on the successful golf tournament we held last fall we will be holding another one this fall that looks to bring a larger crowd. In June, Hall County will host a congressional debate that will be immediately followed by a 9th District Committee meeting at the same location. We are talking about making our District picnic a joint event with the Eleventh Congressional District, hosted by the Gordon County GOP, where several hundred are sure to attend.

We have a mission to elect Republicans. I hope, with the majority of the focus being on federal and statewide candidates, we all take some of our energy and money to remember the candidates on the county level as well. I expect the efforts of our congressional candidates increase our turnout, which will in turn help those candidates down the ballot. In 2008 the 9th District had the 5th highest vote percentage for John McCain versus Barak Obama. Our current partisan voting index is 3rd in the nation and we want to be the crest that helps put our statewide candidates over the top and score wins for Georgia. With the mood of the country today, I am looking forward to winning every constitutional office in November. With the team, voters, and candidates I have in the Ninth, I am blessed and am very proud of them. However, we are smaller part of the Georgia GOP. We are part of your team and we all need to work as hard as we can to win. I don't want just the Ninth to be the most Republican District in the nation, I want Georgia to be the most Republican state in the nation.

Join with us and let's make this happen,

Doug Grammer

Chairman's Message

December 22, 2009

There have been quite a few events that have taken place since my last "message from the Chairman."

In 1992 President Clinton was elected.  There was a run off for US Senate in GA.  Our candidate won.  In 1993 we won several state races for Gov. There were several party switchers to the GOP. In 1994, we took control of congress for the first time in 35 years.  In 2008, President Obama was elected.  There was a run off for US Senate in GA.  Our candidate won.  In 2009, I am encouraged by the GOP wins in VA and NJ.  Today a Democrat Congressman switched to the GOP.  2010 should be a year to remember.

Locally, I am incredibly proud of my good friend David Ralston who will be our next Speaker of the House of Georgia. I first met David in 1992 when we was running for and then elected to the State Senate. Later, he carried the state GOP banner as our Attorney General candidate. He has been in the House of Representatives and challenged the Speaker for that position last year. Timing is everything. It may have been right for him to run then, but it’s even more important that he serve now.

To end, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Doug

The world of politics is not known for being a stable environment. Things can turn on a dime. Kevin Harris resigned on May 29th, to work on Nathan Deal’s campaign for Governor. At that point I became "acting" Chairman up until July 25th.

To begin with, I want to thank all of those who are active in the GOP and concerned about their counties, state, and country. Our job as the Republican party is to elect Republicans. We need the best Republicans we can find. We need to recruit and back candidates who will represent our conservative philosophy.

I was fortunate enough to get elected on the day of the fifteenth annual Ninth District GOP picnic. It was a great event and the Gilmer county GOP did an excellent job. I have been to every other picnic we have had, and this one had the most speakers and I think it was the largest crowd.

We will have choices to make for Governor, congress, and other offices. It’s fine to take a stand and try to help one candidate over another in the primary, but what we need to remember is that we are all on the same team and regardless of who our nominee for an office may be, we need to back them 100%.

I thank others for showing interest in the Chairman’s position, and congratulate Anna McManus, our new First Vice-Chairman; and Duane Hunter, our new state committee member.

I want to focus on the counties first because if we control the courthouses, the battle for the gold dome will be that much easier.

Now it’s time to go to work. This is a team sport, and we need your help. You do not have to be a county officer or district committee member to help. If you have something to suggest, we will listen. If you are willing to help, chime in, and together, we will find something that you can do to help elect Republicans.

Thanks,

    Doug
