Independent Poll Gives Governor High Marks

A recent Strategic Vision poll found Governor Perdue remains popular with Georgia voters.  56 percent of Georgians approve of the job Governor Perdue is doing and 52 percent believe the state is on the right track.

“The poll shows an increased lead for Governor Perdue against both potential Democratic nominees,” said David E. Johnson, CEO and Co-founder of Strategic Vision.  “At this time he is in a very strong position for re-election.”

The poll showed the Governor ahead of Secretary of State Cathy Cox 46 percent to 36 percent.  He led against Lt. Governor Mark Taylor 47 percent to 34 percent.

“Governor Perdue is in very strong shape,” said Johnson.

GORDON SAWYER TO SPEAK AT DECEMBER 3 FORUM
Gordon Sawyer, who was a Republican here when Republicans were rare, will speak at the December 3rd Conservative Forum. Gordon's appearance will be a big treat for all of us. The Hall County Republican Party would not be what it is today were it not for his determination, persistence, and leadership over the decades. We Republicans owe him a great deal. Please help spread the word about his December 3rd visit with us. We will announce details later.

State Representative Carl Rodgers is having  a public hearing Thursday November 3, 2005 at the Georgia Mountains Center starting at 3:00 pm to discuss school taxes.  House Resolution 58 is a proposal to raise the sales tax around the state to fund the local share of school tax we pay.  The House Ways and Means Committee will be there to explain the bill and listen to comments from the public

Political fight breaks out at elections board, members seek Cox's resignation

ATLANTA - A meeting of the State Elections Board turned into a political free-for-all Friday as one member called on Secretary of State Cathy Cox to resign and another suggested fellow board members were breaking the state's open-meetings laws.

Randy Evans, who in addition to his membership on the elections board serves as a lawyer for the Georgia Republican Party and for Gov. Sonny Perdue, said Cox should step down because she wasn't willing to defend a law requiring voters to produce a state-issued photo ID before casting their ballots.

Evans said Cox's vocal opposition to the bill violated her oath of office, and Cox should either defend the law or resign.

Cox said after the meeting she did not intend to step down and called Evans' comments "complete political posturing."

The elections board also voted to instruct Attorney General Thurbert Baker to appeal Murphy's ruling and to change Cox from a defendant in the lawsuit to a plaintiff.
